Remote Learning Snapshot: Neely’s Bend
LEAD Neely’s Bend teachers are using creative methods to make remote learning engaging and valuable for students.
While students may not have art supplies at home, Art Teacher Bee Orgain is challenging students to use what they have around their homes and in nature for projects. With more than 60 students participating in her online art class, she demonstrated how to create a portrait with leaves she collected from her neighborhood.
In Logan Garner’s Social Studies class, more than 70 students are taking weekly virtual field trips to museums, zoos, aquariums and farms! In addition to learning about history and looking at different perspectives in history with the Zinn Education Project, they also keep up with current events by watching the CNN Student News weekly program and completing assignments.
Science teacher Sarah Elegante is using weekly surveys and student feedback to improve lessons. She’s able to conduct virtual labs on google classroom and uses virtual board games for each lesson. For their Earth Day Project, students are making posters or something useful out of recycled materials like planters, coin purses, piggy banks and more!
Students are staying up to date on their math skills with tutorial videos that mirror the packets students’ received in the mail. If students have questions, teachers like Mackenzie Bronkema are posting their phone numbers for their students to not only answer math questions but also allow them to connect and catch up.
Ms. Harrell’s English Language Arts class is keeping students engaged online by reading aloud and facilitating discussion questions. Students can take quizzes on what they read and write responses. Ms. Harrell is able to give specific feedback on students’ written responses and have students go back and revise their writing in Google Classroom.
