LEAD Public Schools Announces New Investment in Arts Education with Hiring of Vice President of Visual and Performing Arts

Today, LEAD Public Schools announced the hiring of Emmy Award-winning music educator Mr. Franklin J. Willis as its first-ever Vice President of Visual and Performing Arts. This newly created position is a strategic step toward LEAD’s vision to provide a holistic, high-quality educational experience that integrates creative opportunities alongside rigorous academics.

In this new role, Mr. Willis will oversee the strategy, design, and growth of visual and performing arts programs across all LEAD schools. This new initiative aims to expand student access to arts instruction that allows them to explore their creative potential.

“At LEAD Public Schools, we believe that a world-class education focuses on academic preparation while also nurturing creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking,” said Dr. Ricki Gibbs II, CEO at LEAD Public Schools. “Creating this brand-new leadership role reflects our commitment to elevating arts programming across our network. We are thrilled to welcome Franklin Willis, whose vision and experience will transform how our students engage with the visual and performing arts.”

Prior to joining LEAD Public Schools, Mr. Willis served as Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), where he championed innovative programming, produced the Emmy Award-winning documentary Every Student Known, and founded the MNPS Elementary Music Festival. A three-time CMA Foundation Music Teacher of Excellence and adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, he brings deep educational expertise and strong music industry partnerships to his new role.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand what happens when educators, artists, industry leaders, and community partners come together around a shared vision, and the results have been extraordinary,” said Willis. “I’m excited to bring that same spirit of collaboration and innovation to LEAD Public Schools, building on the great work already happening while creating new opportunities for students and teachers to thrive. The next generation of Nashville’s creative talent is already in our classrooms, and I can’t wait to see what we create together.”

The creation of the Vice President of Visual and Performing Arts role marks the beginning of a broader, multi-year plan to enhance arts facilities, establish community partnerships, and introduce new performance opportunities for students throughout the network.
