Bridging the Digital Divide: Tech Goes Home at LEAD Public Schools

At LEAD Public Schools, we are committed to making sure our families are connected to their students’ schools. However, for many families, access to technology and knowledge of how to use it can be a barrier. As more school resources and communications move online, being able to access this technology is essential. Through a partnership with the Nashville Public Education Foundation (NPEF) and Tech Goes Home, LEAD Public Schools is helping families build those skills and feel more confident using technology in their everyday lives.

Tech Goes Home provides hands-on technology education designed to help participants strengthen their digital skills and better access online resources. They do this by offering a two-day course where participants spend time learning more about computers, navigating digital tools, and practicing other basic technology skills. Upon completing the course, families receive a Chromebook to take home, giving them the technology they need to continue practicing their skills and accessing online resources.

LEAD Cameron and LEAD Academy have hosted two Tech Goes Home events so far, welcoming dozens of LEAD family members. Beyond general technology skills, the sessions also introduced families to the digital platforms used at LEAD and how they can use these tools to support their students. One key focus was DeansList, a platform that allows families to monitor their students’ attendance and behavior. Participants had the opportunity to explore the platform firsthand, ask questions, and practice navigating its features.

By learning how to navigate these resources, families left with skills they can put to use right away. Whether checking attendance, staying up to date on school information, or accessing online resources, participants gained practical experience that can make them more connected to their students’ schools.

LEAD team members also played an important role in making the sessions possible. Staff volunteered as instructors, aides, interpreters, and child supervisors, helping ensure families had the support they needed to participate. With sessions taking place on Saturdays, the strong turnout reflected families’ commitment to learning new skills and LEAD’s commitment to making those opportunities available.

The success of these sessions highlights the value of bringing resources directly to LEAD families. Through its continued partnership with NPEF and Tech Goes Home, LEAD looks forward to offering more opportunities for families to develop their digital skills and use technology with confidence.
