LEAD Southeast Ex. Ed. students open “Lobos Cafe”
Exceptional Education (Ex. Ed.) students at our LEAD Southeast middle school campus have been hosting a monthly “Lobos Cafe,” where they help plan, prep, cook and serve food to staff members to build on their “Ready for Life” job skills.
“The great thing about Lobos Cafe is that there are so many different roles that need to be filled and they allow our students, who have varying levels of ability, to participate and work on their skills — skills needed to be successful moving forward in their lives,” said Ex. Ed. teacher Elizabeth Savage.
Each month, a group of five-to-seven Exceptional Education students work with teacher Elizabeth Savage and Ex. Ed. Coordinator Jaron Byrum and other students in the school, known as “Best Buddies,” to plan the meals and divvy up responsibilities.
The program has been welcomed at the school by students and staff alike.
“Lobos Cafe is an incredible opportunity for us to celebrate and support our Ex. Ed. students,” said principal Emma Mac. “Not only does it provide them with ‘Ready for Life’ skills like safe food preparation, exchanging money and working with customers, it also provides us a chance to celebrate these amazing kids. Their smiles when they are able to show off their skills will warm your heart.”
