LEAD Academy Hosts Annual Application Day

On social media, it’s called “Finish Strong Friday,” or “#FinishStrongFriday”.

At LEAD Academy this morning, that’s exactly what happened.

There, seniors representing the Class of 2016 took part in the school’s annual “Application Day,” an event in which all seniors apply to between three-and-five colleges to get the ball rolling on their college application process.

In what was as festive a setting as can be — complete with a step show performance by members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Fisk University — seniors applied to at least two of the following colleges: Austin Peay State University; the University of Memphis; Middle Tennessee State University; Tennessee State University; and Western Kentucky University.

This was the largest Application Day to date.

“Today is when all the hard work preparing for the college application process becomes real for students,” said LaVoe Mulgrew, school director. “With their first applications now in the hands of the college representatives, seniors are on their way to reaching their goal to be admitted to a four-year college.”

The high school’s College Counseling Department plans and prepares the annual event. The hope is to motivate and encourage younger students to apply for college his/her senior year and to know that the application process starts your 9th grade year and current actions matter.

In LEAD round-up news, Neely’s Bend hosted an Open House Thursday night that was met with much fanfare. And Brick Church’s football team opened its season with a 16-14 loss to Bailey Middle School.

LEAD will be hosting its first “Sustaining Saturday” professional development workshop of the year Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Brick Church.

Lookout next week for the following events: a Southern Word luncheon with student performances next Friday, Sept. 18 and the First Choice Festival at the Music City Convention Center on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Stay tuned for more and have a great weekend!
