LEAD Public Schools CEO Dr. Ricki Gibbs II Selected as Tennessee Black Male Educator Honoree
Dr. Ricki Gibbs II, chief executive officer at LEAD Public Schools, was recognized as a Black Male Educator Honoree by the Tennessee General Assembly on Monday, April 13. This honor celebrates his leadership, impact, and unwavering commitment to students across Nashville and beyond.
This recognition, presented by Tennessee State Representative Torrey C. Harris, highlights educators who are making a profound difference in their communities. For Dr. Gibbs, this recognition reflects a career dedicated to expanding access and opportunities for all students.
Dr. Gibbs began his career as a third-grade teacher at Paragon Mills Elementary School before moving into school leadership, serving as an assistant principal and then principal in Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). In his role of principal at Warner Arts Magnet Elementary, he led one of the districts’ most successful school turnaround efforts, earning recognition as MNPS’ Elementary Principal of the Year in 2020. Now serving as CEO of LEAD Public Schools, Dr. Gibbs continues the work, leading a growing charter network of schools focused on expanding opportunity and access for Nashville students.
Dr. Gibbs’ recognition also underscores a broader reality within education. Nationally, Black men make up less than 2% of all educators in the United States, highlighting a representation gap in schools. Research shows that students benefit from having teachers who reflect their identities and leaders like Dr. Gibbs, who commit themselves to education and educational equity, work to address that gap.

Dr. Gibbs’ leadership continues to shape both the culture and outcomes across LEAD Public Schools. As he continues to lead with purpose, this recognition serves as both a celebration of his impact and a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive school environments where all students feel represented and supported to succeed.
