LEAD Public Schools Celebrates National School Counseling Week

This week, we celebrate National School Counseling Week, honoring the dedicated professionals who help shape our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. In their own words, our counselors share what drives their passion for supporting students at LEAD Public Schools. These committed educators work to ensure every student has the support they need to thrive, both in and out of the classroom.

“Knowledge is power and I truly love seeing the joy of students and the light bulb click once they have figured out a problem, I enjoy being a school counselor because the students identify me as a safe and supportive person and I enjoy helping them get through challenging times with encouraging words and resources to help them navigate life’s stressors.”

–Kyra Knight, LEAD Cameron

“I love building relationships and fostering a sense of community with students. My role allows me to help them navigate their personal, social, and academic challenges in a healthy and positive way. I love providing a safe space where students can discuss their struggles and empower them to develop coping skills to reach their full potential. My hope is to make a lasting impact that guides them towards a happy and successful future.”

–Tara Carmichael, LEAD Southeast Middle School

“I love being a school counselor because this job allows me to make a positive impact on students’ lives and empower them to reach their full potential. Watching my students grow and learn each year is such a rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to support them during their middle school years.”

–Sophie Meidl, LEAD Neely’s Bend

“’Never down a girl who is down today, but cheer her in her sorrow; for this old world is a crazy old world and you may be down tomorrow.’ This is a quote I have strived to live by my entire life. Being a light in someone’s darkness is exactly why I chose this work.”

–Paulita Edmondson, LEAD Neely’s Bend

“I love being a school counselor because I am able to build positive relationships and be an additional support for students. It’s rewarding because I get to see them transition into who they are meant to be; I am able to witness their growth and assist them in building on their strengths, working on their weaknesses, and gaining better interpersonal skills as young adults.”

–Ashley Greer, LEAD Academy

“I love being a middle school counselor! It’s such a unique stage of life, and I find purpose in knowing that I can provide students with a safe place to land while they build confidence and sense of self.”

–Lauren Petty, LEAD Southeast Middle School

“I love being able to give students a safe, non judgemental space to share their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It makes me so proud when students can see their progress and continue to achieve their mental health goals!”

–Sarah Korff, LEAD Academy

“I love being a school counselor because I am able to make a positive impact on students’ lives and teach tools to be successful socially, academically, and emotionally.  I am able to help students navigate the unique challenges middle schoolers face and provide a safe space to discover their full potential. It is a privilege to witness their growth over time!”

–Evanne Galat, LEAD Cameron

“I love being a counselor because it is a job that gives back.  Watching students gain awareness around their emotions and mental health and apply this to their lives is my favorite part of this work.”

–Claire Belcher, LEAD Academy

“I think what I love most about being a school counselor is not only building connections with so many incredible students, but also showing them that they have someone who will listen. Amongst all the stressors that try to disrupt them, they have a space where they can speak without fear of judgement or criticism. Releasing the weight of our worries, and fears is a gift that I want to be sure is given to them.”

–Demaris Wolf. LEAD Southeast High School
