LEAD Cameron Student Celebrates Published Novel with Book Signing Event

On April 9, Ariana Acosta Colon, a LEAD Cameron Alumna and current LEAD Academy 9th grader, celebrated a milestone that not many people can say they achieved: hosting her first book signing as a published author. For Ari, this moment was about more than just a school event, it was an opportunity for her to celebrate years’ of hard work and dedication.

Ari began writing “Life as a Fifth Grader” when she was in 5th grade, marking the start of her middle school experience. She was inspired by her ELA teacher, Andre Mayberry, and her own experience preparing to transition into middle school. Ari’s main goal was to share an experience that everyone goes through, but isn’t regularly represented in books or the media. “The feeling of entering middle school, nobody really talks about what it’s like and how different it is from elementary.”

What started as a classroom idea turned into something more. When Mayberry introduced the opportunity to write a novel to his classes, he encouraged all of his students to take on the challenge if they were interested. Ari immediately stood out, and was excited by the idea. She got to work right away and committed to bringing her story to life.

To help guide the process, Mayberry set a clear goal: “We had a goal of trying to write one page per day,” he said. While he provided support along the way, he made it clear the work belonged to Ari. “I told Ari the same thing I told all my students: I’ll brainstorm with you, edit your work, and support you, but I won’t write this for you.” That combination of structure, independence, and enthusiasm ultimately paid off, as she turned her ideas into a published book.

Although life got in the way as Ari started playing sports and engaging in other extracurricular activities, she was committed to finishing her book. By eighth grade, that persistence paid off. Her book was officially published on April 1 of last year, bringing her story to life in print.

Ari’s book signing presented her with the opportunity to share her work in a new way, sharing her novel with her peers. People stopped by, and Ari answered questions, signed copies, and reflected on the journey that brought her there.

This wasn’t just a celebration of Ari’s accomplishment; it was also a powerful example of what’s possible when students are encouraged to pursue their passions beyond the classroom. Her project was entirely self-driven, completed outside of school hours, and supported by the mentors and experiences that shaped her along the way. Even now, Ari continues to re-read work, bringing back fond memories and surprising herself with how many real-life details she included.

From writing during lunch periods to signing books in front of her school community, Ari’s journey is a testament to creativity, discipline, and a reminder that every student has a story worth telling.

“Life as a Fifth Grader” is now available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
