From Teacher to Principal: Dominique Smith’s Journey at LEAD
At LEAD Public Schools, we believe our power is in our people, which is why each and every teacher is provided with a coach to guide their career development and support their growth as an educator and professional. Principal Dominique Smith is a testament to this intentional focus.
Smith’s LEAD journey first began in 2017 as a 6th-grade math teacher. In this role, she laid the foundation for her future success, developing a deep understanding of student needs and effective teaching practices. Her passion for education and natural leadership abilities quickly became apparent to those around her.

The following year, Smith transitioned into the role of instructional coach. This position allowed her to share her expertise with fellow educators, honing her skills in curriculum development and teacher support.
The year 2020 – a pivotal time in education – allowed Smith to step into the role of director of instruction. In this capacity, she took on greater responsibility for shaping the educational direction of the school.
In 2021, moving into the role of assistant principal of instruction, Smith further developed her leadership skills and gained valuable experience in school administration. Her ability to balance the needs of students, teachers, and the broader school community prepared her for the next step in her career.
Smith achieved her goal of becoming a principal in 2022, taking the helm at LEAD Neely’s Bend Middle School. Smith notes that the support she received throughout her journey at LEAD was invaluable to accomplishing her goals.
“Throughout my years at LEAD I have always had someone who discussed my career progression with me during multiple occasions throughout the year,” she said. “When I arrived at LEAD, I told my boss at the time, my goal was to become a principal. Not only from him, but through other mentors at LEAD, they have helped me to accomplish that goal.”
Smith’s story is a shining example of LEAD’s commitment to fostering career growth and helping employees reach their individual goals. LEAD firmly believes that by investing in our staff and supporting their professional aspirations, we can better serve our students and community.
