For Jaryn Toms, the journey from LEAD Academy to Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been one defined by perseverance and determination. Now a full-time occupational therapist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, she credits her teachers and coaches, and the lessons she learned both in the classroom and in sports, for shaping her success.
“LEAD Academy gave me more than just an education. It provided a strong foundation that helped shape who I am today,” Toms said. “The teachers and staff genuinely cared about my growth and consistently encouraged me to strive for excellence both inside and outside the classroom.”
Toms, who ran cross country and played basketball at LEAD, said those experiences taught her discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, skills that proved invaluable through college and graduate school. Reflecting on her journey, she says LEAD’s core values continue to guide her today.
Even from a young age, Toms was encouraged to dream about her future post-secondary plans. “The college trips we took, starting as early as middle school, gave me valuable exposure to different campuses and helped me envision myself in a variety of college settings,” she said.
Now, the patients she serves in her career as an occupational therapist are benefiting from the foundation that was built early on in her educational journey at LEAD.
“One lesson that stuck with me from LEAD Academy is what it truly means to be a LEADer. I still remember the core values we were taught from the very beginning: I lead because I am disciplined, courageous, committed, and a leader. These principles became a part of who I am and have guided me through every leadership role I’ve taken on in both undergrad and grad school.”
As a licensed occupational therapist, Toms has achieved what she once dreamed of, earning a doctorate and working at the number one hospital in the Southeast. She says that LEAD’s unique environment set her up to be a true leader in everything she pursued. “LEAD provided a community that emphasized leadership, and this helped me build the confidence to pursue my goals,” she said. “I am truly grateful for the relationships I built and the values I learned at LEAD, because they continue to guide me in everything I do.”
