Student Spotlight: From Newcomer to Leader – Anthonela’s Inspiring Journey at LEAD Neely’s Bend

At LEAD Neely’s Bend Middle School, every student has the opportunity to shine, and 8th grader Anthonela is a prime example. Her journey at LEAD Neely’s Bend began in the newcomer program, and now, in her final year of middle school, Anthonela serves as a leader who is achieving academic excellence. When Anthonela first arrived in Nashville and at LEAD Neely’s Bend in September 2023, she was enrolled in our newcomer program – a specialized support system designed to support English language learners who are new to the country. Like many students facing the challenge of learning in a new language, Anthonela encountered obstacles along the way.

“My biggest challenge was speaking and understanding English,” Anthonela said.

But what started with challenges has blossomed into confidence and academic leadership. “Her confidence, especially in speaking, has skyrocketed this year,” says English Language Arts Teacher Hannah Wyrick. “She has gone from speaking quietly and as little as possible to starting conversations about any and everything, with both teachers and her peers.”

Wyrick notes that Anthonela was nervous about transitioning out of the newcomer space at the beginning of this school year, but is proving every day that hard work pays off. “She is intentional about trying before asking for help and always uses the tools and skills that she has been given to increase her comprehension of the work.”

A Model Student and Peer Leader

What sets Anthonela apart isn’t just her academic progress – it’s how she approaches learning with intentionality and curiosity. Her thoughtful annotations and regular questions don’t just demonstrate her own engagement; they inspire her classmates to dive deeper into their learning.

Wyrick shares a powerful example of Anthonela’s leadership: “When students gave final presentations at the end of Q1, Anthonela was randomly selected as one of the first students to go. She pushed through her nerves, stood at the front of the classroom, and presented her project with clarity and professionalism. Her courage was inspiring for her classmates and encouraged them to shake off their own nerves and to put their best effort forward into their own presentations.”

Her influence extends beyond formal presentations. “Her classmates know that she can always be counted on to be on-task,” Wyrick explains. “If a student ends up daydreaming and misses an instruction, Anthonela is one of the first students they look to to see what they are meant to be doing. She fills gaps that I don’t always notice are there, simply by investing herself in her learning and showing grace for herself and those around her.”

The Power of a Supportive Environment

Anthonela’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of consistent effort, resilience, and the supportive environment that LEAD Neely’s Bend strives to provide for all students.

“LEAD Neely’s Bend is particularly equipped to support students like Anthonela through a staff of knowledgeable, intentional, and understanding staff members,” said Wyrick. “Every person in the building approaches students with understanding and patience, which encourages multi-lingual learners to step out of their comfort zones and push themselves and their learning.”

“Something I’m proud of is that I can write, talk, and understand English,” said Anthonela about her own progress since arriving at LEAD Neely’s Bend.

Additionally, the diversity of the school itself creates an environment where students can see themselves in other students and advocate for each other.

Anthonela has stepped up to do just that as she went out of her way to welcome a new newcomer student this year. “Anthonela was one of the first people to get to know her, advocate for her, and ensure that she felt welcomed and supported in the classroom,” Wyrick recalls.

“Anthonela exudes kindness and understanding and can always be found laughing with a friend or enjoying the struggles that accompany learning. She is honest and transparent with her struggles and successes, which encourages others (even adults!) to do the same.”

Looking Forward

Today, Anthonela continues to excel academically while serving as an inspiration to her peers. Her story reminds us that with the right support, every LEAD student can not only succeed but become a leader who lifts others up along the way.

Anthonela shared her dreams for the future: “When I grow up I want to be a flight attendant,” she said.

We’re incredibly proud of Anthonela’s journey and excited to see where her continued growth will take her.
