LEAD Public Schools Prioritizes Student Safety with New Security Enhancements and Training

Ensuring our buildings are safe and secure for our students and staff is always our top priority at LEAD Public Schools. To gear up for the 2025-26 school year, LEAD spent the summer making additional investments in both new security equipment and safety training so our schools have the right resources to provide a safe learning environment for our students.

Investing in Campus Security

Recognizing that school security technology is constantly evolving, LEAD continues to update its equipment annually. For the 2025-26 school year, every LEAD campus received key safety upgrades, including:

  • Security camera enhancements for improved monitoring and coverage.
  • Vape detection systems to address a growing issue in schools.
  • Upgraded building access control systems for more secure entry points.
  • Security film added to specific campuses to protect from those seeking to do harm.

Additionally, each campus was restocked with new first aid and medical supplies. Starting in September, LEAD will also implement metal detectors at all middle and high school entrances to prevent unsafe items from entering school buildings.

New Emergency Operations Training

In addition to new equipment, LEAD introduced an advanced emergency operations training program for all school leadership teams over the summer. This new training program stands out from previous years because it uses data from real-life situations to provide a deeper understanding of crisis scenarios and human behavior. This approach shifts the focus from static, scripted drills to effective communication, contingency planning, and proactive response.

The training covered important topics, including:

  • National incident command structures for coordinated responses.
  • Team collaboration and risk mitigation.
  • Roles and responsibilities during a crisis.
  • Actions and timelines during violent acts, including law enforcement response.
  • Self-defense and medical training.
  • Best practices for securing classrooms and protecting students.

“The training has greatly expanded our leadership teams’ knowledge, and we expect to see a higher level of intentionality, communications, and effective planning,” said Dr. Tony Majors, chief operating officer at LEAD Public Schools. “This allows our teams to integrate best practices for safety and security into everything we do, promoting a secure and safe environment for our entire community.”
