Bringing Books to Students: LEAD Southeast Middle School’s Mobile Library
In an age where digital distractions compete constantly for students’ attention, LEAD Southeast Middle School has found an innovative way to reignite the joy of reading: bringing the library directly to students through the BookMobile – a partnership with the Nashville Public Library.
A Library on Wheels
“The BookMobile is a library initiative to bring the public library and more access to public library resources to our school,” explains Quana Greer, who runs the program at LEAD Southeast Middle. “It is also a way to engage students in reading as a form of an incentive.”
The program operates on a simple but effective premise: students who demonstrate classroom engagement earn passes to visit the BookMobile. “We incentivize students who are actively reading in their acceleration classes by giving them a pass to the BookMobile,” Greer says. This approach transforms reading from an obligation into an opportunity – something students can look forward to and take pride in achieving.
What makes the BookMobile particularly effective is its carefully curated selection. As Greer notes, “The BookMobile has more access to books in genres that students are interested in,” moving beyond traditional school library limitations to offer students what they actually want to read.
Reading as Reward, Not Requirement
The response from students has exceeded expectations. “Students have responded very well to having the BookMobile on campus,” Greer said. “They are very excited to showcase their books to their classmates. They are also proud to be given those passes, knowing that they take reading seriously and get rewarded for it.”
This pride matters. When students see their reading achievements recognized and rewarded, it fundamentally shifts their relationship with books. The BookMobile becomes more than just a source of reading material – it becomes a symbol of accomplishment.
Building Community Connections
For Greer, the initiative serves multiple important purposes beyond simply getting books into students’ hands. “This opportunity is very important for students because it opens their mind to viewing reading as more of a leisure,” she said. “It also gives some excitement about experiencing something they’ve never had before.”
Perhaps most significantly, the BookMobile serves as a bridge between students and their broader community. “It bridges the gap between our public libraries and our charter school,” Greer emphasizes. This connection reminds students that public libraries belong to them, that these resources exist for their benefit, and that their community invests in their growth and education.
Measuring Success
When asked about the program’s biggest successes, Greer points to something fundamental: student investment. “The biggest success so far is seeing students be more invested in reading,” she said. The school has even expanded beyond using the BookMobile purely as an incentive: “We’ve even chosen students at random to go to the BookMobile just to gain more excitement around reading in general.”
This strategic expansion demonstrates the program’s ripple effect. By occasionally selecting students at random, the school creates buzz and anticipation throughout the entire student body, making the BookMobile a topic of conversation and interest beyond just those who’ve earned passes through their acceleration classes.
Vision for the Future
Greer’s ambitions for the program extend well beyond the middle school campus. “My hopes for the future LEAD Southeast mobile library is that we spread access to the public library resources to not only the middle school,” she shares. “Instead, we make it an entire Southeast experience and then the LEAD experience.”
Her ultimate vision captures something essential about why this program matters: “Shining light on the joy that comes from the mysteries within a book.” In a world of instant answers and constant connectivity, books still offer something irreplaceable – the opportunity to lose yourself in someone else’s story, to discover new worlds, to encounter mysteries that unfold page by page.
The Bottom Line
The BookMobile at LEAD Southeast Middle School isn’t just about increasing circulation numbers or meeting reading benchmarks. It’s about fundamentally changing students’ relationship with reading – transforming it from an academic requirement into a genuine source of joy and discovery.
