LEAD Neely’s Bend Students Gain Professional Experience Through Front Office Jobs
From stocking the staff lounge and copy rooms to managing inventory, three 7th grade students at LEAD Neely’s Bend are getting a taste of what it’s like to work in a professional environment–during the school day. Shariya Dean, Journey Nelson, and Rihanna Matthew all serve as student workers in the front office of their school, an opportunity that allows them to develop valuable skills that prepare them for the future, both academically and professionally.
“I have seen these students increase their ability to be disciplined while also serving others,” said Jerchelle Chaney, operations associate at LEAD Neely’s Bend. “These students have an awesome work ethic and are great team players.”
Dean, Nelson, and Matthew have all established a reputation of being responsible students in their school community and were selected to work in the school’s front office based on good behavior, strong attendance, and excellence in their academic classes.
“I think it’s important to help my school community because I can set a great example,” said Dean about why she wanted to take on this additional responsibility.
Not only are the student workers responsible for administrative duties, they also assist with operational tasks like supporting early dismissals and setting up for school events. They also provide assistance as needed to the school’s principal, Dominique Smith.
“I have learned how to be a hard worker and multitask,” Nelson said of her experience working in the front office. Matthew adds that she enjoys this role because “giving back makes people happy.”
Not only do these students exemplify the LEAD ethos by serving others, they are also proving their commitment to being ready for college and ready for life by taking on additional responsibilities that will help prepare them for their future.
