LEAD Academy Celebrates Black History Month

All LEADers shoutout to our more than 40 LEAD Academy students participating in a celebration of Black History Month later today in the Cameron Auditorium. The showcase begins at 5 p.m. and is a way for our students to celebrate the culture and lasting legacy of African Americans throughout our country’s history.

“This lets us show our culture,” said junior Keiara Price, who plays Alicia Keys in the showcase. “So much is going on in the world now, we need to step up. We have a lot of injustice toward the Black community and it needs to be known. It’s important. When we get older, we’re going to be able to show the people who come after us that this is important.”

The program begins with a performance of the Negro National Anthem and continues with an African tribal dance. Throughout the hour-and-a-half long tribute, students will honor the legacies of pioneers, inventors and entertainers from the Black community.

“The goal for putting on this program is for students to showcase their talents, as well as their culture,” said Donyelle Townsend, one of the faculty advisers along with colleagues Christina Desnoyers and Denise Lowe. “The experience has been great. Our students are very passionate and always stand up for the things they believe in. For that, we are very proud.”
